Studies for Pentimenti Drawings. 2005-06.
(2 panels, 27” x 36" each.) Gouache and archival ink jet prints on Japanese gampi paper.
I'm interested in experimenting with installation formats that allow me to use static media such as painting, drawing, and printmaking to express dynamic phenomena like memory and time. This installation includes three large drawings that hang from ceiling to floor. Each drawing is comprised of three separate sheets of translucent gampi paper hung adjacent to one another so that the compositions on both sides are affected by the traces of drawings and prints from the underlying sheets, creating a kind of layered pentimenti. The gampi paper, thin and fragile, shifts with the slightest air currents causing the images from the underlying sheets to move in and out of focus to create a drawing that is constantly changing - and emphasizing how memory is contingent.
